Number Two Sink - Normandy Double Bowl Sink
The Normandy Double Bowl Sink is a traditional French farmhouse ceramic sink and is the second most popular sink on sinks.co.uk. Its continued popularity is due to the fact that it is the largest double bowl sink available at that site. It differs from other double bowl sinks in that it has two equal-sized bowls that can easily accommodate large oven trays, specifically those found in Agas. In fact it is the site’s only double bowl sink that allows an Aga tray to be fully immersed in water. Single Bowl and DrainerThere is nothing more annoying than having a beautiful farmhouse sink that won’t take large pots, pans and trays comfortably. Having a sink large enough to take oversize items makes much lighter work of washing up. The proportions of the Normandy French farmhouse sink were designed with this in mind, and count as its most practical feature to Aga owners and anyone who uses large oven trays or extra large cooking pots.
The Normandy Double Bowl Sink is made from fireclay ceramic, as opposed to the standard ball clay, which ensures an incredibly durable product. The use of fireclay guarantees a hard wearing sink if you look after it the right way.
From traditional natural wood kitchens to contemporary and sleek kitchens, this particular style of traditional French farmhouse sink fits all schemes, accentuating both vintage and urban designs. Not only is the Normandy Double Bowl Sink a very practical sink, it will suit all kitchen styles. It is perfectly suited to washing up all sizes of pots and pans, but is also ideal for washing vegetables and even defrosting large pieces of meat. Due to its size, it is easy to defrost even a large leg of lamb in it.
After the first ceramic Belfast and Butler sinks came into being in the late 19th century, French farmhouse sinks followed suit. Two French brothers, Emile and André Porcher, set up a factory in northern France, using the local clay to make their ceramic sinks. As opposed to the rough red Staffordshire clay commonly used at Potteries, their clay was of a superior quality, allowing the French manufacturers to produce a finer product. Giving new meaning to longetivity, a few of the designs from the end of the 19th century are still in use today. Continuing to this day at its factory in the Loire region, the Porcher name enjoys the reputation as one of the oldest and most respected name in the production of fireclay sinks.
To give it an authentic vintage look, the Normandy Double Bowl Sink has stamped on its side the manufacturer's logo. The farmhouse sink will accommodate 60mm basket strainer wastes in a non-tarnish brass or Satin chrome finish. Another option is to have a plug and chain, but in this situation the chainstay needs to be drilled into the worksurface.
Fireclay sinks are easy to maintain, but to do so requires you follow a few simple guidelines. Cleaning daily with a non-abrasive cleaner like washing up liquid will prevent stains like coffee and wine building up. Round Kitchen Sink For tougher stains, like those from aluminium saucepans, it’s best to use a specialist cleaning product recommended by the manufacturers, like Astonish, which is especially formulated for fireclay ceramic sinks and is available to order from sinks.co.uk.
