Guitar Plectrums / Picks ! please help !?
What is the best material for a plectrum and what size , gauge and type would you recommend ?
Well it all depends on what type of guitar, acoustic or electric, and what style of music you play. For example I play electric guitar and use Dunlop Jazz III guitar picks. They are made of nylon I believe and are very small which makes them good for lead playing. Generally, thicker gauge picks are generally better for rhythm playing because you can get a nice fat sound from the strings, whereas thinner gauges, I feel, allow you to play faster. Most picks are generally made from a type of plastic, but you can get felt picks, metal picks and even stone picks.(Brian May from Queen used a coin as a pick!)
At the end of the day what you should do is buy a few different picks to test out or go to a local guitar store and try out different picks to see which one you prefer. I think this is the best way to choose because then you can see yourself which is more comfortable for you.
Try some Nylon picks, some Dunlop Tortex (tortex and lexan are both types of plastics) picks and some Lexan picks and see which is better for you. Try a medium gauge pick first then decide if you want a thicker or thinner gauge. I hope this helps!
