How A Goth Might Decorate Her Home
Unless you have a daughter or a son who is a goth or are one yourself, you can only guess about how he might decorate his house or apartment. You can make a pretty good stab at it, though, judging from the clothes they wear.
It's fairly obvious that the color of choice for gothics is black. Their entire wardrobe (and many of them have large ones) is black. They even wear black lipstick. The only things that break up this color scheme are their silver jewelry and the occasional touch of vermilion. It's not too much of a stretch to conclude that a goth would have a black dining room set with an ornate silver candelabra in their home.
Their choice of china would definitely be black. They would have ornate silverware, polished to perfection. It may even be an antique silverware set, circa the era when Count Dracula lived in his castle. His dining room would be the inspiration for theirs.
That black color scheme would continue into the living room. Our well-heeled goth, who might be the lead guitar for a famous band, would have nothing but the best in his or her living room. The black leather couches and chairs would be the most sumptuous available. The coffee table would be hand-crafted, complete with gothic symbols shaped into its ornate metal frame. Only the television would be of minimalist design, but that's only because nobody makes gothic style TVs.
What would be the main color in the bedroom? It would be black, of course. If they didn't have a black four poster, they would have a black full size loft bed.
Does a loft bed seem like an odd choice? If so, think about this: bats hang from ceilings. People can't hang from the ceiling, but they can sleep on an elevated bed near the ceiling. While it's not quite as good as changing into a bat, it's a step in the right direction.
As subcultures go, the gothic subculture is one of the more interesting. Most people wrote it off as a fad, but it persists. You can find them in any major city in the United States, Europe and Japan. They have their own styles and they keep to themselves. Many people are intimidated by them, but really, outsiders don't know the first thing about them.
Some people think they are making a nihilistic statement. Others think they are aligned with the devil. Nobody knows for sure. Many goths go through the week dressed as 'normal' people and save their gothic gear for the weekends. You may have one working at the desk next to you and not even know it.
They may not live in homes that are decorated like the imaginary one described above. As a matter of fact, it's a good bet that most of them do not. Most goths are still living with their parents, who probably are not all that into black. The fact that they are interesting, though, makes it fun to have goth neighbors, even if you never get the opportunity to learn what really makes them tick.
