Recent Accessories Make Installing Home Theater Kits A Snap
Multi-channel audio has become mainstream and vendors have created many types of basic and more sophisticated technologies like wireless surround sound speakers, virtual surround sound to simplify the setup of home theater systems. I will review the latest trends to find out which products really work. I will also give some advice for selecting the best components.
The majority of recent TVs will be installed as a multi-channel audio system. As traditionally TVs would contain built-in stereo speakers, today a number of external loudspeakers are used to let the viewer experience surround sound. In case of 5.1 surround, 6 speakers are utilized: center, left and right front, left and right rear and a subwoofer. More recent 7.1 systems need a total number of 8 speakers by adding 2 additional side speakers.
Therefore setting up a home theater has turn out to be pretty complex and long speaker cable runs are normally undesirable for aesthetic reasons. Some technologies have emerged to simplify this procedure.
The first solution is generating so-called virtual speakers by applying signal-processing to the audio and introducing phase shifts and special cues to those audio components that would usually be broadcast by the remote speakers. As the signal processing is based on how the human hearing detects the origin of sound, the sound components which underwent signal processing can be mixed with the front speaker components and broadcast by the front loudspeakers. The signal processing has an effect that will deceive the listener into assuming that the audio is originating from an alternate position.
This technology minimizes the quantity of needed speakers and avoids long speaker wires but each human will process sound slightly differently because of the shape of the ear. The signal processing is based on measurements which are done using a standard human ear model. If the shape of the ear changes, sound will travel in a different way. As a result virtual surround will not function equally well for everybody.
One more option for avoiding long speaker cord runs is to employ wireless surround sound products or wireless loudspeakers. A wireless kit contains a transmitter and one or several wireless amplifiers. The transmitter connects to the source. The wireless amplifiers connect to the remote speakers. Generally the transmitter part will come with amplified speaker inputs and line-level inputs. This provides freedom to connect to any type of source. A transmitter volume control helps take full advantage of the dynamic range and avoids clipping of the sound inside the transmitter.
As a few wireless speaker kits come with a wireless amplifier that connects to two speakers, other products offer individual wireless amplifiers for each speaker. The most basic wireless devices use FM broadcast. FM transmission is susceptible to noise and sound degradation. More sophisticated devices employ digital audio transmission to completely preserve the original audio. In multi-channel audio products, it is vital to choose a wireless option with a latency of only a few milliseconds. This will guarantee that the audio of all loudspeakers is in perfect sync. If the latency is larger than 10 ms then there will be an echo effect which will degrade the surround sound. Some wireless products work at 5.8 GHz which offers the advantage of less competition from other wireless products than devices employing the crowded 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz frequency band.
An alternative method, which is often called sound bars utilizes side-reflecting speakers. The audio that would normally be sent by the remote speakers is instead sent by speakers at the front. These front speakers broadcast the audio at an angle. Then the audio is reflected by the side and rear walls and appears to be coming from besides or behind the viewer. The result heavily depends on the interior, especially the shape of the room and the decoration. It will work well for square rooms with no obstacles and sound reflecting walls. However, realistic scenarios frequently will vary from this ideal and reduce the effect of this approach.
