Watching sports in another country – especially if the sport is specific to the area – is a good way to open your eyes to culture and entertainment in that place.

3. Dubbed American Movies

Instead of watching new American movies with subtitles, watch old ones you’ve already seen that have been dubbed in the language of your host country. Since you probably remember the story, it won’t matter if you don’t catch every single word of the dialogue (or the majority). You’ll be training your ear to the language of the country you’re in while enjoying an old favorite.

4. Local Series and Shows

If your language skills are strong enough, watching local series and television shows is a great way to get to know the culture of the place you’re visiting. While you may not understand everything, you’ll probably be surprised at how well you can follow the story.

5. News

This can be the most difficult to watch, especially in another language. Newscasters speak quickly. And since there’s no story to follow, you’ll have to rely on your ears and a few visual clues to understand what’s going on. While you may not be able to understand everything, you’ll probably catch the drift.

Watching television abroad can be both a comforting and enriching experience. It can be an escape from what sometimes feels like a barrage of information. It can also be a look into the popular and mass culture of a far and distant place.
