Perfect height for guitar pickups?
Ever noticed your guitar doesn't have the punch and output of other guitars? Ever noticed when you have test driven a guitar to check it out in a music shop that when you then plug another guitar into the same amp without adjusting the settings the level of output can change significantly?
Do not forget is everyone's gear is different, there's no hard and fast rule to adjusting pickup height simply because all pickups have various levels of output. In brief you are attempting to achieve a perfect signal to noise ratio. Signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) makes reference to how much output you can attain before the standard of your signal starts breaking up. The magnets in the pickups will pick up unwelcome noise if you've got your Pickups Set too high. Achieve the perfect height however and you will have more output and less noise.
Messing with Magnets
Adjusting your pickup height can have some side-effect, some more obvious than others. For instance there may be an honest to goodness pull from the pickups on the strings causing potential problems such as fret buzz, your pickups are magnets afterall.
Keep under consideration also the closer your pickups are to your strings the more the tone is totally outlined by the pickups. You can even opt for this, but most gurus agree if your guitar is made from a reasonable quality tone wood achieving perfect tone is a balance between great pickups and natural timber qualities of your instrument.
Setting your pickups too high can also play havoc on your playing as your picking hand may become obstructed by the bridge.
Getting underway
There is not any real set way to go about this, basically you are testing and making corrections till you are satisfied but there are 1 or 2 basic pointers.
- Test at a pragmatic volume.
- Set your tone controls where you would typically have them.
- Play in a comfortable position.
- Push the boundaries, sound peculiar? What I basically mean is do not stop when you believe that you have attained the perfect
- balance. Keep pushing it till you have essentially gone too far then scale things back a bit. This permits you to get the finest possible reference point.
Adjusting your pickup height is vital to getting the best out of your guitar but bear in mind often when you change one thing you result on another, thus remember it's all about balance, find what works best for you and always experiment.
